WHO DOESN'T LOVE SNACKS?

Actually, depending on your constitution, snacking can be really important for maintaining energy and healthy blood sugar throughout the day. NOBODY likes being hangry. And snacking can prevent those crazy dips in blood sugar that make us feel like we want to eat everything in sight. Personally, I like to practice "preventative snacking" around 2pm so that I can make it safely to dinner time without becoming an irritable, starving mess.

It's particularly important to choose well balanced snacks that have healthy fats and protein. Carrots with hummus, a rice cake with nut butter or a couple hard boiled eggs are great choices... but my favourite type of snacks are the kind that also taste like brownies.

ENTER: Chocolate brownie energy bites!

They're perfect for a mid-day energy boost or sneaky dessert without a ton of processed sugar.  Simple to make and super nutritious. These little guys are full of healthy fats and protein from the walnuts, and fibre from the dates and oats. These would be great to bring with you on hikes, and they also make a really good little pre-workout snack. I like to make a batch on the weekend and so I'm set for snackin' all week. Enjoy!

Chocolate Brownie Energy Bites (makes ~20)
2 cups walnuts
2 cups medjool dates, pitted
1 cup quick oats
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1/4 tsp salt

Directions

  1. Place all ingredients in the bowl of a food processor and process on high until a sticky, crumbly consistency is reached. The dough is ready when you can press it together with your fingers and it sticks.

  2. Roll into small, bite sized balls and place in the fridge for an hour to set. Enjoy within 5-6 days.
